Milk for your skin

Milk for your skin

We all know that milk is good for health due to the calcium content in it. But is it good

for external application? Is it good for our skin? Yes, doctors and beauty experts say that it is a great natural agent that can work wonders for the skin.

How many of us know that milk hydrates dry skin, exfoliates dead skin, soothes irritated skin and lightens dark skin? Milk and its by-products like yogurt and buttermilk share the same skin benefits with a little variation.

Buttermilk or yogurt is preferred for oily skin types while the full cream or whole fat milk is preferred for dry skin types. You can even use milk powder in case you cannot get fresh milk; it would still be beneficial for your skin.

For the skin, raw or unpasteurized milk is preferred because heating of milk destroys the skin-friendly enzyme content of milk and alters the fat and protein structure. Hence, it is desirable to use fresh and unpasteurized milk for maximum benefit.

There are very rare side effects of usage of milk for external application. Only when you have a very sensitive skin, think twice before you use milk on your skin, otherwise you are good to go.

Here are the benefits of using milk on our skin and reasons why this wonder ingredient should be used as a natural beauty product.

Makes Your Skin Bright And Radiant:

To get a bright and radiant skin, go for a milk bath. A milk bath is very soothing. Close a bathtub's drain, run some hot water and add about 3-4 litres of milk or even more to the tub. Now, rest in this milk bath for about 20 minutes. You can do this every day for about a week if you want to see quicker results.

Your skin becomes brighter and radiant. Alternatively, if you want a home-based spa, add some oats and rose petals to the bath tub along with milk. This will nourish and rejuvenate your skin and body. Always wash off with warm water after your milk bath to remove the milky residue from your body.

Removes Dark Patches:

Similar to lemon juice, milk has skin lightening properties too. The lactic acid in milk helps to remove dark patches when used regularly. Take a piece of cotton ball, soak it in milk and apply on the dark patches. Leave it overnight so that the milk is absorbed well into the skin. Rinse off in the morning. This process can also be followed for lightening the skin.

Skin Toner:

You can use either milk or yogurt as a skin toner. Apply a thick and even layer of yogurt or milk on your skin. Let this sit for at least 10 minutes so that the skin absorbs the mask very well and then rinse off.

Soothing Sunburns:

An excellent home remedy for sunburn is to soak a clean cloth in fresh milk and refrigerate this for some time. Then apply this over the sun-burnt area as a cold compress. Milk helps to soothe the sunburn with the help of anti-inflammatory, moisturizing and skin-repairing properties. However, it is vital to remember that you do not use whole-fat milk or milk cream because its fat content might insulate the sunburn, hindering the loss of heat.

Healing Cracked Heels:

Since milk can exfoliate dead skin and get rid of the dryness of the skin, it is a great ingredient to heal cracked heels. You can add some oats and coconut oil for better results.
